Camp I Can 2008

 

The San Diego County Chapter of the Autism Society of America in collaboration with the Mission Valley/Toby Well YMCA of San Diego and the Palomar Family YMCA of Escondido sponsors Camp I CAN each summer. 

Camp I CAN-Camp Including Children with Autism Now was started by the SDASA in 2002 when the need for appropriate summer recreation programs for children with autism was not being met.  The goal of the camp is to add a meaningful, fun, recreation experience for children with autism in a structured and safe environment.

Camp I CAN costs over $150,000 each year and is funded by the SDASA.  Over 80% of this budget is to pay for staffing of the camp.  All Out for Autism, our largest annual fundraiser, is held each year to raise the necessary funds for camp.  Help us keep this important program going by participating in our fund raising efforts.

Camp I CAN registration information
WHO? Camp I CAN is open to any child living in San Diego County ages 6 years to 17 years. 
WHAT?

Each camper is paired with a trained, one-on-one aide (ratio is 2 adults to 3 children during High Functioning week of camp).  There are daily field trips to various local venues such as Boomer's, the Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, Knott's Soak City, ice skating, bowling and Pump It Up, to name a few.  There is daily swimming at the YMCA pool.

Camp is for one week.  Due to the high demand, each camper may attend only one week.
WHEN? Applications for Camp I CAN will be mailed to all current members the week of March 1 with registration beginning on Monday, March 10. Children may be enrolled in only one week of camp.
WHERE? Camp will be held Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 3:30pm at the following locations and during the following weeks:

Mission Valley/Toby Wells YMCA of San Diego
July 21-July 25 6-12 year olds  
July 28-Aug. 1 9-14 year olds  
Aug. 4-Aug. 8 6-12 year olds  
Aug. 11-Aug. 15 13-17 year olds  
Aug. 18-Aug. 22 6-12 year olds High Functioning/Asperger's Week

Palomar Family YMCA of Escondido
July 21-July 25 6-12 year olds  
July 28-Aug. 1 9-14 year olds  
Aug. 4-Aug. 8 6-12 year olds  
Aug. 11-Aug. 15 6-12 year olds High Functioning/Asperger's Week

 

(campers take field trips throughout the camp week to various locations as noted above)
FEES There is a camp tuition charged to each participant (2008 fees TBD).  Financial assistance is available for those who need it.
REGISTRATION Membership in the SDASA is not required.  Camp applications are mailed to all members the first week of March.
